The ‘Great Game’ in the Philippines
nter-imperial rivalry and alliances with native powers (1830–1880)
Abstract
From the first quarter of the 19th century, the strategic and economic value of the Philippine archipelago attracted the attention of different imperial powers. The colonial authorities in Manila and the Spanish government in Madrid tried to cope with British, French and German pressures in a context of growing international conflict and European penetration of Asian markets. The Spanish colonial advance in the southern Philippine archipelago was, largely, driven by fear of other imperial competitors. In this article, we start from this general context to discuss some illustrative events and cases that have received little attention in the historiography.
