Zamboanga and the Fight against Piracy: Trade, Negotiation and Expeditions
Abstract
During the 19th century, piracy in the southern Philippine seas increasingly occupied the efforts of the Manila government, which wished to avoid international conflicts and the damage caused by this practice. To this end, methods were tested that were not limited to violence, but also included practices that could ensure future control of the territory and its integration into the colonial economy. In this regard, Zamboanga played a fundamental role as a military port, a privileged commercial zone, and the first point of diplomatic contact with the Philippine sultanates during the 19th century.References
