The four Franciscan heroes at the Baler's siege

Abstract
On Friday, June 2nd, 1899, was signed in the Plaza de los Naranjos of the Philippine
town of Baler the capitulation that put an end to the siege suffered by a Spanish military detachment besieged by troops of the Philippine Revolutionary Army, which have been estimated, at some moments of the siege, to be ten times the Spanish ones. Although this siege could have been another of the many sieges that suffered the Spanish garrisons scattered throughout the Philippine archipelago, the one sustained by the so-called «Los Últimos de Filipinas» –the last men in the Philippines– inside the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa church, will go down in military history as the longest one in the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines. Three Franciscan friars were among the besieged troops, but also a fourth religious belonging to the same order can be found as a witness of the siege as a prisoner of the Tagalogs. Undoubtedly, they are the great forgotten among the heroes of the historic deed of the defense of the Baler´s position.
