Resumen

Las ideas sobre la autodeterminación evolucionaron de la comprensión Wilsoniana del autogobierno a una norma y un impulso para la descolonización que cambió el panorama del siglo XX. A pesar de su proclamación general como un derecho de todos, la ONU lo aplicó como un "principio del agua salada". Por lo tanto, el único titular legítimo de derechos, los pueblos coloniales, podían realizar la autodeterminación bajo varios instrumentos legales y dentro del principio de uti possidetis juris que preservaba la artificialidad de las fronteras. Las controversias legales de los procesos de descolonización son numerosas y su cabo suelto parece estar presente hasta ahora, ya que los mismos principios se aplicaron durante la disolución de las federaciones socialistas tras la caída del Telón de Acero.
